A commitment to impact
When I have to stay after school on a Friday to upload web stories, spend my evenings editing a podcast or wake up early for work on Saturday, my friends ask me how I enjoy doing something that demands so much of my time. But the truth is, journalism has never felt like work to me– I look forward to it. I always feel rewarded for my time on task because the “work” results in something that has the power to inform, connect and inspire my community. The conversations I have, the perspectives I uncover and the voices I amplify make every late night and early morning worth it. Journalism isn’t just an obligation for me; it’s a passion that fuels me, challenging me to constantly learn and improve my craft, and a responsibility I embrace.
While most students might narrow their journalistic focus, I pride myself on my versatility. I’ve explored a wide range of storytelling formats– writing in-depth investigative pieces, producing engaging podcasts, creating video content, directing social media and covering breaking news. My diverse set of skills ensures that I can adapt to any story and any audience, offering high-level reporting that’s more impactful.
This portfolio consists of my best writing, designs, innovations and contributions to our journalism program. And that’s what this award is about– strong journalism. I understand there are many outstanding applicants for this award, each with unique stories to tell. What sets me apart is how I took the initiative to create several brand-new journalistic endeavors that genuinely impacted my community. As I said, Journalism is about people, and I will never stop using my platform to amplify others’ voices to ensure their stories are heard, fostering empathy and connection across diverse perspectives.
Thank you for your consideration for this prestigious award and for continuing to honor the importance of journalism.
