Finding Voices
Portfolio for student journalist Will Clifford
Journalism constantly pushes me to learn— both about myself and the world around me. The beauty of it is that I'll never feel like my craft is complete— but that's OK. There's always something new to explore, a skill to refine or a perspective to understand.
Every writer searches for their own voice and adds a personal touch to their work, but for me, journalism is just as much about representing others' voices and bringing their stories to life in the most effective way. At its core, journalism is about people — detailing their struggles and triumphs. Nearly every story I pitch begins with a conversation, listening to others whose voices might otherwise go unheard.
As Digital Editor-in-Chief of ReMarker at St. Mark's School, I took pride in guiding younger journalists in refining their skills. When someone needed help meeting a deadline, an interview fell through, or a story needed redirection, we worked together as a staff to overcome reporting challenges. That experience taught me the importance of collaboration and mentorship in journalism.
Now at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, I continue building on that foundation through sports reporting for The Daily Orange and broadcasting for WAER and CitrusTV. Journalism has the power to shape society, and I believe writers owe their audience more than just good reporting. Whether I'm spending hours researching a source or double-checking a fact, every detail matters in preserving the truth and fostering a united community.
