Finding Voices
Portfolio for Texas High School Journalist of the Year
Journalism constantly pushes me to learn– both about myself and the world around me. The beauty of it is that I’ll never feel like my craft is complete– but that’s OK. There’s always something new to explore, a skill to refine or a perspective to understand. Every writer searches for their own voice, adding a personal touch to their work, but for me, journalism is just as much about representing the voices of others and bringing their stories to life in the most effective method.
At its core, journalism is about people — detailing their struggles and triumphs. Nearly every story I pitch begins with a conversation, listening to others whose voices might otherwise go unheard.
As the Digital Editor-in-Chief of our news website, I take pride in guiding younger journalists through the process of refining their skills. If someone needs help making a deadline, an interview falls through or a story needs redirection, we work together as a staff to overcome the challenges of reporting.
Journalism has the power to dictate society, and I believe writers owe it to their audience to go above and beyond in their reporting. Whether I’m spending hours researching a source or double-checking a fact, every detail matters in preserving the truth and fostering a united community.
